Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from botanical material (flowers, herbs and other aromatic plants) to achieve relaxation, relief from stress and other disorders. Some people think that the system of aromatherapy is a new one, but has been employed since the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks and Romans.

Aromatherapy massage is truly a great way to relax and de - stress, the essential oils do offer the added extra of their therapeutic properties to the body during massage while being absorbed by the skin.Massaging is not the only way in which the molecules of essential oils can be absorbed by the body, but can be used in the following ways as well: Inhalation and vaporization, Sauna, Foot and hand baths, Showers, Bathing, Sitz bath, Creams and lotions, Air freshening, Compresses etc and as a rule are not taken internally.

Essential oils are the natural oils distilled (Most frequently by steam or water) from a variety of plant parts, such as the flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, twigs and resin. The method of extraction depends on the part of the plant from which the oil is being taken and is a highly specialized process. To read more please click here.

Extraction (Distillation) of essential oils

Extraction of essential oils may sound only to be of technical interest, it is one of the key points which determines the quality of the oil that is used, since a wrong, or wrongly executed extraction, can damage the oil, and alter the chemical signature of the essential oil.Distillation converts the volatile liquid (the essential oils) into a vapor and then condenses the vapor back into a liquid - it is the most popular, and cost effective method in use today in producing essential oils.

Methods of distillation

  • Water distillation, Steam distillation, Hydro diffusion, Cohobation, Rectification,
    Water and steam distillation,

Solvent extraction, solvents are used to coax the essential oils out of the botanical material, and various ways
are also employed.

Expression is a cold pressed method of extraction, which is mostly used in the extraction of citrus essential oils.
There are various safety measures to keep in mind with aromatherapy, but if they are adhered to, it can be a most satisfying and helpful way of helping to alleviate certain problems.

Skin patch test

If you are a person that has a problem with a sensitive skin, it is strongly advised that you perform a skin patch test before using any essential oils for the first time.

Carrier oils

Essential oil (except for a few exceptions) should never be used undiluted on the skin, and needs to be mixed with a carrier oil (also referred to as a base oil) to dilute the concentrated molecules and to help spread them over the surface of the skin, and this is done by diluting them in carrier oils. As a rule of thumb, you would normally need about 30 ml of carrier oil to perform a full body massage. Carrier oils, also referred to as base oils, are fixed oils (since they are not volatile) and are from vegetable origin extracted from either nuts or seeds.

Carrier oils can also posses their own therapeutic properties and they also enhance the absorption of the essential oils through the skin. Most carrier oils are furthermore rich in fatty acids as well as other nutrients.
